Sump Pump Installation and Replacement Cost

Fixr's sump pump guide (January 2025) separates three jobs, and the price gap between them is large.
New installation. A new submersible pump and pit with above-ground drainage averages $1,400 nationally, with most jobs between $800 and $2,000. Digging the pit is $500 to $1,200 of that. This Old House lists $1,200 to $2,500 including pit and electrical work. See sump pump installation.
Replacement. Swapping a pump in an existing pit runs $350 to $1,000 and usually takes one to three hours. See sump pump replacement.
Backup. Battery backup units run $150 to $2,000, water-powered backups $200 to $900. See battery backup sump pumps.
Discharge. Burying the discharge line adds $250 to $2,000; an above-ground extension $150 to $400. The Akron-Canton airport averages about 120 days a year with a low below freezing (NOAA 1991-2020), so ask how the outlet is kept from icing.
When to test. May, June and July are the wettest months at the airport, each above 4 inches in a normal year. Pour a bucket of water into the pit each spring and watch the pump start and stop.
