Bowing Basement Wall: Straps, Anchors, Braces or Rebuild?

Bowing Basement Wall: Straps, Anchors, Braces or Rebuild?

A basement wall bows inward when wet soil pushes harder on the outside than the wall can resist. A horizontal crack partway up a block or poured wall is the classic sign. Measure the bow with a string from corner to corner and write down the date.

Carbon fiber straps. Epoxied to the inside about every 4 feet. Acculevel recommends them for bows of 2 inches or less. Fixr lists $4,000 to $12,000 per project. See carbon fiber wall straps.

Wall anchors. A plate buried at least 10 feet out in the yard, a rod through the wall, tightened from inside, about every 5 feet. Acculevel prices them at about $830 to $1,000 each (2020) and recommends them beyond 2 inches. See wall anchors.

Steel I-beam braces. Beams from the floor to the joists, set against the wall; they need no yard space but take room inside. Ask for the price per beam. See steel I-beam wall braces.

Rebuild. When a wall has sheared or moved too far, an engineer may call for wall replacement. Fixr puts structural damage repair at $2,500 to $25,000.

Then fix the water. Fixr recommends pairing carbon fiber repairs with waterproofing. Better yard drainage lowers the pressure that bowed the wall.
